So
far we've produced a musical record and a documentary-both labors
of genuine love. You'll find our CD to be quite unique. For music
collectors and music listeners in general Here comes
el
Son stands alone in the record universe as an authentic musical
treat. It's a compilation of songs of the legendary The Beatles
played in ways you've never heard before. Find out what we mean by clicking on the MUSIC menu above or here to watch our grassroots videos on YouTube.
El
Cristo Negro de Portobelo-our first modest film product-is a
documentary about the festival of the Black Christ in Panama. It's
celebrated annually in the small rural coastal town of Portobelo,
once the famed Spanish colonial port from where New World gold was
shipped exclusively across the Atlantic to the coffers of Spain's
royalty. The pagan pilgrimage, a ritual born of the culture of Black
slaves brought by Spaniards to Panama, draws the country's downtrodden
and poor and an unusual number of its delinquents to Portobello
where the legendary Black Christ effigy awaits in the church altar.
From all corners of the country they come, many on foot, to offer
penitence and pray to el Naza, the nickname given to el Cristo Negro.
The mythical statue is then mounted on a heavy hardwood pedestal
to be shouldered by men who wrestle for the chance to carry the
enormous structure in a slow procession march of two steps forward
and one back. For hours it is paraded through the tiny town's narrow
streets and the swarm of impassioned and often drunk believers.
Our partner Alfredo Alvarez Calderón produced the documentary
as testimony to the many times he's made the trying walk from Panama
city to Portobello with a group of friends. Check out our visual
sample and click here to find out more about El Cristo
Negro de Portobelo.
......Other
projects are on the drawing board. With good fortune we'll make
them real in the not too distant future. We'll keep you posted.
......Thanks
